U.S. stock declines accelerated into the close on Friday as the major equity indexes ended a volatile month lower.
The S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq Composite each sank. The S&P 500 ended Friday’s session lower by 3.6{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}, and dropped about 8.8{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} for April to post its worst monthly performance since March 2020. The Dow dropped 4.9{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} for the month. The Nasdaq Composite was the biggest laggard, sliding by more than 13{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} in April alone in the index’s worst month since October 2008.
Treasury yields climbed, and the benchmark 10-year yield rose above 2.9{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}. Shares of tech juggernaut Amazon slid after the company unexpectedly posted a quarterly loss and offered a weaker-than-expected current-quarter forecast. Apple’s stock also declined even after the iPhone-maker exceeded quarterly sales and profit estimates, though the company still cited ongoing supply chain constraints.
A day earlier earlier, the S&P 500 closed out Thursday’s session sharply higher, gaining 2.5{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}, while the Nasdaq Composite rose by 3.1{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} in its best day since March 16. Still, the S&P 500 still posted its third monthly decline so far in 2022, even during a month that is typically seasonally solid for equities.
Volatility has resurged in recent weeks amid concerns over whether tighter monetary policies from the Federal Reserve might derail the economy. And these fears compounded with lingering jitters over persistent inflation, geopolitical turmoil and an ongoing COVID outbreak in China. The S&P 500 was on track for an about 5{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} drop in April, based on Thursday’s closing level.
“There’s a lot of rerating going on, whether it’s the rerating of equity valuations, the rerating of interest rate expectations, or the rerating of inflation expectations, against tightening happening at the Fed,” Todd Jablonski, Principal Global Asset Allocation chief investment officer, told Yahoo Finance Live. “The threats of a slower economy, the threats of inflation, and the threats of higher energy prices out of the conflict in Ukraine [are] all sort of coming together to really stymie investor confidence and sentiment.”
Plus, the data this week on corporate profits and the broad economy have shown signs of decelerating growth. Results from Big Tech companies including Alphabet and Twitter pointed to a slowdown in online ad businesses as companies pull back on marketing spending in the wake of moderating consumer demand. And throughout this earnings season, a plethora of companies across industries have pointed to elevated input and labor costs, as well as ongoing supply chain disruptions.
Against this backdrop, the U.S. economy contracted for the first time since the second quarter of 2020 at the start of this year, government data Thursday showed. The 1.4{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} annualized contraction in first-quarter U.S. GDP came as net trade, inventories and government investment each weighed on overall domestic output, and as consumer spending came in less robustly than expected.
However, the weaker-than-expected GDP print may also bolster the case for members of the Federal Reserve to exercise more caution as they prepare to raise interest rates further and begin rolling assets off the central bank’s balance sheet. These moves would raise borrowing costs and help bring down demand to stem inflation — but also risk tipping the economy into a deeper downturn if financial conditions tighten too quickly.
“There’s just so much concern around, do we go into a recession in the next 24 months because the Fed may just raise interest rates too much?” Ryan Payne, Payne Capital Management president, told Yahoo Finance Live. “I think that’s what’s really weighing on the markets, and more so than the fact that we have a war in Ukraine and these inflationary numbers have just been through the roof.”

10:15 a.m. ET: Consumer sentiment revised down slightly for April, but still leaps compared to March: U. Michigan
The University of Michigan’s closely watched consumer sentiment index was revised down slightly in the final April print, though the index still held well above March’s levels.
The headline consumer sentiment index from the university’s Surveys of Consumers came in at 65.2 in April, according to the final monthly print released Friday. This compared to the 65.7 reported previously. In March, the consumer sentiment index had been at 59.4, or the lowest since 2011.
“The downward slide in confidence represents the impact of uncertainty, which began with the pandemic and was reinforced by cross-currents, including the negative impact of inflation and higher interest rates, and the positive impact of a persistently strong labor market and rising wages,” Richard Curtin, Surveys of Consumer chief economist, wrote in a press statement Friday. “The global economy has added even more uncertainties about prospects for the U.S. economy, including the growing involvement in the military support for Ukraine, and renewed supply line disruptions from the COVID crisis in China.”
“Moreover, consumers have lost confidence in economic policies, with fiscal actions increasingly hampered by partisanship in the run-up to the Congressional elections,” he added.
A subindex tracking consumers’ 1-year inflation expectations held steady at 5.4{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}, which matched March’s level for the highest since 1981.

AbbVie announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Rinvoq (upadacitinib, 45 mg (induction dose) and 15 mg and 30 mg (maintenance dose)) for the treatment of adults with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis (UC) who have had an inadequate response or intolerance to one or more tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blockers. The approval is supported by data from two Phase 3 induction studies and one maintenance study. In these studies, significantly more patients treated with Rinvoq achieved the primary and all secondary endpoints compared to placebo. The safety of Rinvoq, including the 45 mg dose as induction therapy, in these studies was generally consistent with the known safety profile of Rinvoq, with no new important safety risks observed. This approval marks the first indication for Rinvoq in gastroenterology and represents Rinvoq’s fourth FDA approved indication.
AbbVie announced positive top-line results from the Phase 3 induction study U-EXCEL, which showed Rinvoq (45 mg, once daily) achieved both primary endpoints of clinical remission and endoscopic response, compared to placebo at week 12, as well as most key secondary endpoints in patients with moderate to severe Crohn’s disease (CD). The safety results in this study were consistent with the known profile of Rinvoq, with no new safety risks observed. U-EXCEL is the second of two Phase 3 induction studies to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Rinvoq in adults with moderate to severe CD and full results will be presented at upcoming medical conferences and published in a peer-reviewed journal. Positive top-line results from the Phase 3 portion of the first induction study, U-EXCEED, were announced in December 2021 and the maintenance study for both clinical trials is ongoing.
AbbVie announced that the FDA extended the review period for Skyrizi (risankizumab) for the treatment of moderate to severe CD by three months to review additional data submitted by AbbVie, including information about the on-body injector. Currently approved indications for Skyrizi were not affected by this extension. Skyrizi is a collaboration between Boehringer Ingelheim and AbbVie, with AbbVie leading development and commercialization globally.
AbbVie announced that it resolved all U.S. Humira (adalimumab) litigation with Alvotech. Under the terms of the resolution, AbbVie will grant Alvotech a non-exclusive license to its Humira-related patents in the U.S., which will begin on July 1, 2023. AbbVie will make no payments of any form to Alvotech, and Alvotech will pay royalties to AbbVie for licensing its Humira patents and acknowledges the validity and enforceability of the licensed patents. The resolution included dismissal of the patent and trade secret litigation between AbbVie and Alvotech.
At the Congress of European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization (ECCO), AbbVie shared 26 abstracts, including 16 oral and digital oral presentations, that reinforced AbbVie’s commitment to research that helps advance standards of care for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. Highlights included new post-hoc analyses from the pivotal Phase 3 Skyrizi program in CD as well as results from a post-hoc analysis of Phase 3 Rinvoq pivotal trials evaluating UC symptoms.
At the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) Annual Meeting, AbbVie and Allergan Aesthetics presented new research that demonstrated their shared commitment to advancing science across a spectrum of dermatologic conditions and aesthetic indications. The research included new data on the efficacy, durability and safety of Rinvoq and Skyrizi as well as data from across the Allergan Aesthetics portfolio.
AbbVie and Genmab announced topline results from the first cohort of the EPCORE NHL-1 phase 1/2 clinical trial evaluating epcoritamab (DuoBody-CD3xCD20) in patients with relapsed/refractory large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL) who received at least two prior lines of systemic therapy. Results from this cohort demonstrated a confirmed overall response rate (ORR) of 63.1 percent with a 12-month median duration of response. Based on the topline results, the companies will engage global regulatory authorities and data from the clinical trial will be presented at a future medical meeting. Epcoritamab is being co-developed by AbbVie and Genmab.
At the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting, AbbVie presented positive results from a Phase 2 trial evaluating navitoclax in combination with ruxolitinib in patients with myelofibrosis that previously had a suboptimal response or disease progression with ruxolitinib monotherapy. The study evaluated 34 patients and median overall survival was not reached for patients who had a ≥ 1 grade improvement in bone marrow fibrosis (BMF) or ≥ 20{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} variant allele frequency (VAF) reduction. Additionally, at the time of analysis with > 2 year follow up, the survival estimate was 100{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} in patients who had improvements in BMF or VAF.
AbbVie announced that it submitted a supplemental New Drug Application (sNDA) to the FDA for Vraylar (cariprazine) for the adjunctive treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). The submission is based on clinical trial results that showed clinically and statistically significant improvement in the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) total score in patients with MDD treated with Vraylar and an antidepressant. If approved, this milestone will be the fourth indication for Vraylar joining approvals for the treatment of adults with schizophrenia, the acute treatment of manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder and the treatment of depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder. Vraylar is being co-developed by AbbVie and Gedeon Richter Plc.
AbbVie announced that the Phase 3 PROGRESS trial evaluating Qulipta (atogepant), an oral calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist (gepant) for the preventive treatment of chronic migraine in adults, met its primary endpoint of statistically significant reduction from baseline in mean monthly migraine days compared to placebo, for both the 60 mg once daily (QD) and 30 mg twice daily (BID) doses, across the 12-week treatment period. The study also demonstrated statistically significant improvement in all secondary endpoints and the overall safety profile of Qulipta was consistent with safety findings observed in previous studies with an episodic migraine population. Data from this study will support a submission to expand the use of Qulipta to include preventive treatment of chronic migraine in the U.S. and additional submissions globally.
At the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting, AbbVie shared 30 abstracts demonstrating the breadth of its neuroscience portfolio. The abstracts highlighted AbbVie’s continued migraine treatment research across the spectrum of the disease, AbbVie’s commitment to patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease and new studies in spasticity and cervical dystonia.
AbbVie and Gedeon Richter Plc. (Richter) announced a new co-development and license agreement to research, develop and commercialize novel dopamine receptor modulators for the potential treatment of neuropsychiatric diseases. The collaboration is based on the results of preclinical research carried out by Richter and includes several new chemical entities selected for development. AbbVie and Richter have collaborated for 15 years on Central Nervous System (CNS) projects, including globally launched products such as Vraylar.
AbbVie announced the successful completion of its acquisition of Syndesi Therapeutics SA. The acquisition gives AbbVie access to Syndesi’s portfolio of novel modulators of the synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A), including its lead molecule SDI-118, which is currently being evaluated for the potential treatment of cognitive impairment and other symptoms associated with a range of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease and MDD.
Allergan Aesthetics announced that the FDA approved Juvederm Volbella XC for improvement of infraorbital (undereye) hollows in adults over the age of 21. With this approval, Juvederm Volbella XC became the first and only dermal filler to receive FDA approval for the improvement of infraorbital hollows.
At the Aesthetic and Anti-aging Medicine World Congress (AMWC), Allergan Aesthetics presented research that demonstrated its commitment to the future of aesthetics with a forward-facing trends report. The meeting also marked Allergan Aesthetics’ entry into the emerging category of Hybrid Injectables with the launch of HArmonyCa with lidocaine across Europe. The dual-effect Hybrid Injectable contains two active ingredients, hyaluronic acid, a well-known ingredient found in facial fillers, and calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA), which is known to help stimulate collagen production.
AbbVie announced positive results from the Phase 3 VIRGO trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of investigational twice-daily administration of Vuity (pilocarpine HCl ophthalmic solution) 1.25{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} in adults with age-related blurry near vision (presbyopia). Additional details of this trial will be presented at future medical congresses and will serve as the basis for a sNDA submission for an optional twice-daily administration to the FDA in the second quarter of 2022. Approved by the FDA in October 2021 for once-daily use, Vuity is the first and only eye drop to treat age-related blurry near vision in adults.
At the American Glaucoma Society (AGS) Annual Meeting and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Annual Meeting, AbbVie presented data from its leading portfolio of eye care treatments. Highlights included updated analyses that help further scientific understanding of Durysta (bimatoprost intracameral implant), a first-of-its-kind biodegradable implant to lower eye pressure for glaucoma patients; new data on the Xen Gel Stent, a surgical implant designed to lower high eye pressure approved for refractory glaucoma patients; and new data on Vuity 1.25{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}.

Non-GAAP Financial Results
Financial results for 2022 and 2021 are presented on both a reported and a non-GAAP basis. Reported results were prepared in accordance with GAAP and include all revenue and expenses recognized during the period. Non-GAAP results adjust for certain non-cash items and for factors that are unusual or unpredictable, and exclude those costs, expenses, and other specified items presented in the reconciliation tables later in this release. Beginning in the first quarter of 2022, the company includes the impact of upfront and milestone payments related to collaborations, licensing agreements, and other asset acquisitions in its reported non-GAAP financial measures. Prior periods have been revised to conform to the current period presentation. AbbVie’s management believes non-GAAP financial measures provide useful information to investors regarding AbbVie’s results of operations and assist management, analysts, and investors in evaluating the performance of the business. Non-GAAP financial measures should be considered in addition to, and not as a substitute for, measures of financial performance prepared in accordance with GAAP.

During the three months ended March 31, 2022, AbbVie changed its classification of development milestone expense associated with licensing and collaboration arrangements in the consolidated statement of earnings. Milestone payments incurred prior to regulatory approval, which were previously included in research and development expense, are now presented as acquired IPR&D and milestones expense. The reclassification decreased research and development expense and increased acquired IPR&D and milestones expense by $115 million for the three months ended March 31, 2021. The company believes this presentation assists users of the financial statements to better understand the total upfront and subsequent development milestone payments incurred to acquire in-process research and development projects. Prior periods have been revised to conform to the current period presentation. The reclassification had no impact on total operating costs and expenses, operating earnings, net earnings, net earnings attributable to AbbVie, Inc., earnings per share, or total equity.

U.S. stocks ended sharply higher Thursday, led by technology shares as markets continued a comeback from steep losses earlier this week.

The S&P 500 gained 2.5{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped by more than 600 points, or 1.8{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite climbed 3.1{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} to cap trading, marking its best rise since March on the heels of stronger-than-expected earnings from Facebook parent company Meta (FB) that sent shares up nearly 18{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}.
Investors weighed fresh data out of Washington D.C. that showed U.S. economic activity unexpectedly contracted at the start of 2022 for the first time in nearly two years as lingering supply chain imbalances, inflationary pressures, and war in Eastern Europe weighed on growth. First-quarter U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) fell at a 1.4{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} annualized rate after a 6.9{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} pace of growth at the end of 2021.
“The latest snapshots of economic data remind us of the volatile and complicated times in which we live,” Bankrate Senior Economic Analyst Mark Hamrick said in an emailed note.
With just three trading days left in April, the typically-bullish month is on pace for its worst performance since logging a 9.0{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} drop in 1970, according to data from LPL Financial Research.
“The usual suspects of a slowing economy, a hawkish Federal Reserve Bank, supply chain worries, war in Europe, and now another China shutdown have all combined to make this one of the worst starts to a year ever for both stocks and bonds,” LPL Financial Chief Market Strategist Ryan Detrick said in a commentary Tuesday.
Investors are in the throes of a lackluster earnings season, with 180 companies on the docket this week for quarterly reports. Traders are digesting mixed results from high-flying mega-cap tech giants: Apple (AAPL) and Amazon (AMZN) are set to round out Big Tech earnings after the closing bell on Thursday on the back of figures from Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOGL), and Meta (FB) in recent days. The technology behemoths represent 22.2{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} of the S&P 500’s market capitalization.
Shares of Meta Platforms were up roughly 17{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} in early trading Thursday after the company reported first-quarter daily active users that beat expectations after Wednesday’s market close. Last quarter, Facebook lost $230 billion in market value, marking the worst single-day wipeout in history for any U.S. company after the social media giant reported a profit decline attributed in part to a drop-off of U.S. users on its flagship platform and competition from TikTok.
“The bar was super low for Facebook, and this report is likely to clear it,” analysts at Vital Knowledge said in a note following the earnings release.
Elsewhere in markets, investors continue to grapple with headwinds from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, persisting supply chain snafus and inflationary pressures, and a further liftoff on interest rates as soon as next week when the Federal Reserve convenes for its next policy-setting on May 4. Adding to those crosscurrents are renewed worries over an ongoing COVID-19 resurgence in key regions across China that threaten to exacerbate the global economic outlook.
LPL Financial pointed out, however, that double-digit declines during a year are normal.
“After only one 5{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} pullback all of last year, markets have provided an unfriendly reminder in 2022,” Detrick said in his Tuesday note, adding that since 1980, the average correction each year is 14.0{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}, putting this year’s 13.0{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} correction in perspective.
He also pointed out that during the 21 times since 1980 that the S&P 500 has seen double-digit declines from its peak, the index managed to come back and finish the year positive 12 of those years.

9:02 a.m. ET: Another 180,000 Americans filed new jobless claims last week
Applications for unemployment fell again in the latest weekly data, holding near their lowest levels since the 1960s, as a strong labor market and improving levels of unemployment remain a bright spot in the U.S. economy.
The Labor Department’s latest weekly jobless claims report showed 180,000 claims were filed in the week ended April 23, coming in below the 184,000 economists surveyed by Bloomberg had expected.
First-time filings for unemployment benefits held below 200,000 for a 10th consecutive week.
Given the surge and then decline in jobless claims, the Labor Department has also now reconfigured the way it adjusts the weekly data to account for seasonal factors. Starting last week, the Labor Department returned to using “multiplicative” seasonal adjustment factors for the data. For much of the pandemic, the department had been using “additive” seasonal adjustments that help smooth out large swings in the weekly numbers.
“As measured by a proxy for layoffs, the job market appears to be holding up just fine,” Bankrate Senior Economic Analyst Mark Hamrick said in an emailed note. “Seasonally adjusted new jobless claims declined from the previous week to 180,000. That’s a bit above the more than 50-year low of 166,000 last month.”

8:55 a.m. ET: US GDP unexpectedly contracted at a 1.4{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} annualized rate in Q1
U.S. economic activity unexpectedly slowed in the first three months of 2022 for the first time in nearly two years as lingering supply chain imbalances, inflationary pressures, and war in Eastern Europe weighed on growth.
The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) reported in a preliminary estimate that first-quarter U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) fell at a 1.4{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} annualized rate after a 6.9{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} pace of growth at the end of 2021. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg anticipated an increase of 1{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}.
The GDP report serves as a backwards-looking overview of economic activity, capturing the January-through-March period, but the metric is an important indicator of the state of the U.S. economy at the start of this year — particularly as some strategists increasingly predict the possibility of a recession in the near to medium term. A recession is typically measured by two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth.
“In the first quarter, an increase in COVID-19 cases related to the Omicron variant resulted in continued restrictions and disruptions in the operations of establishments in some parts of the country,” the BEA said in its report Thursday morning. “Government assistance payments in the form of forgivable loans to businesses, grants to state and local governments, and social benefits to households all decreased as provisions of several federal programs expired or tapered off.”

U.S. stocks plummeted Tuesday, accelerating this month’s sell-off on Wall Street as investors weighed a flurry of corporate reports against a backdrop of inflationary pressures and concerns over an economic slowdown.
The S&P 500 fell 2.8{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} to cap the session, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 800 points, resuming losses after the index briefly recovered on Monday. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite tumbled nearly 4{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}, logging its third biggest drop of the year and marking its lowest close since December 2020. Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury yields retreated, with the 10-year benchmark falling to 2.7{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}.
“I do think this is going to continue to be a market where we might have one step forward, two steps back in terms of absorbing some of the headlines that we’re seeing,” JP Morgan Asset Management Global Market Strategist Meera Pandit told Yahoo Finance Live.
April has historically been a strong month for stocks, and has produced a positive return for the S&P 500 in 15 of the last 16 years, LPL Financial’s Ryan Detrick pointed out in a note earlier this month. This month, however, markets were wrought by Russia’s war in Ukraine, continued worries around the Federal Reserve’s rate hiking cycle, inflationary and supply chain pressures, and fears the culmination of these headwinds may result in an economic slowdown.
“We are seeing signs that growth is slowing, and there is talk of a recession in the next year or two,” Brad McMillan, Chief Investment Officer for Commonwealth Financial Network, said in an emailed note, adding however that what we have seen is a “typical, if sharper than usual, market cycle.”
“In the short term, it is painful, but in the longer term? It really doesn’t mean much,” McMillan said. “As long as the economy is basically healthy (which it is) and as long as policymakers are on top of things (which they are), companies will keep growing and making money.”
Investors are in the heart of earnings season, with the S&P 500’s most heavily-weighted components scheduled to report earnings results this week.
Google’s parent company Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) kicked off reporting from mega cap tech names, revealing first-quarter sales that were roughly in-line with estimates. The tech giant showed resilience in its key search and YouTube advertising businesses. Shares fell roughly 4{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} in extended trading.
Facebook parent company Meta (FB), Apple (AAPL), and Amazon (AMZN) are set to report quarterly results on Wednesday and Thursday.
As of Friday, one-fifth of companies in the index have reported results for the first quarter so far, with 79{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} reflecting an earnings beat for the period – above the five-year average of 77{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}, according to the latest available data from FactSet. The magnitude of the earnings beat, however, is below the five-year average: 8.1{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}, compared to 8.9{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}.
“The lower earnings growth rate for Q1 2022 relative to recent quarters can be attributed to both a difficult comparison to unusually high earnings growth in Q1 2021 and continuing macroeconomic headwind,” John Butters, a FactSet senior earnings analyst, said in a note.
U.S. stocks paralleled movements in global equity markets to start the week, with major stock indexes in Europe and Asia largely falling on renewed concerns a COVID outbreak in China may spur another wave of lockdowns and further disrupt global supply chains.
“I think the most interesting thing happening in China right now is not that the yuan’s moving and not that the economy’s slowing – it’s that everything that’s happening right now, we knew weeks ago,” China Beige Book CEO Leland Miller told Yahoo Finance Live. “We knew that the economy was slowing, we knew they were not going to stimulate in a big way, we knew that lockdowns were spreading from Shanghai to other big cities, we knew the Fed was hiking, we knew there’s a policy crackdown, so it is interesting that people are seeing today as a pivotal moment.”
Elsewhere in markets, shares of Twitter fell 4{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}, one day after the social media giant formally announced on Monday that it agreed to be acquired by Tesla CEO Elon Musk for $54.20 per share, or $44 billion. Twitter shareholders are set to receive $54.20 in cash for each share held, representing a 38{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} premium over Twitter’s closing level on April 1.
