Stocks claw back losses to close out volatile day

Stocks clawed back losses on Monday as investors looked ahead to a busy week of corporate earnings results, economic data and a Federal Reserve monetary policy-setting meeting after an already volatile stretch of trading.

The Nasdaq Composite ended in slightly positive territory after dropping 4.9{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} at session lows. And earlier, the S&P 500 was off by more than 10{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} from its record closing high from Jan. 3 before recouping declines. The Dow recovered losses of more than 1,100 points to end nearly 100 points higher.

The CBOE volatility index, or VIX, jumped to as high as about 37.95, reaching its highest level since November 2020.

Prices for major cryptocurrencies tracked the decline in equities. Bitcoin fell to about $33,000 Monday morning, sinking by more than 50{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} from its early November high. And ethereum was down more than 10{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} to hover just over $2,000 as of Monday morning in New York.

Expectations for tighter financial conditions out of the Federal Reserve this year have served as one major factor weighing on equity prices, especially for highly valued stocks that had benefited from the easy financial conditions and high liquidity environment the Fed had contributed to since 2020.

This week’s Fed meeting, with a new monetary policy statement and press conference from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Wednesday, is expected to produce virtually no immediate changes to policy. However, as the Fed looks to rein in inflation that has ballooned by the most in four decades during the pandemic-era recovery, this meeting will likely set the stage for the Fed to indicate it is nearing the start of interest rate hikes and has been further contemplating rolling off assets from its nearly $9 trillion balance sheet.

And the Fed is unlikely to be deterred from moving in this more hawkish direction even in the wake of recent volatility across markets, some strategists suggested.

“Until we get a further selloff in risk assets, the Fed will simply not be convinced that raising interest rates and reducing the size of its balance sheet in 2022 will more likely cause a recession rather than a soft landing,” Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research, wrote in a note on Monday.

“Either outcome would dampen inflation, of course, which is why 10-year Treasury yields have stopped climbing,” he added. “But only a soft landing would allow public companies to continue to post strong earnings. The risk of a hard landing is why U.S. large caps are under so much stress.”

A number of large-cap corporations are also set to report earnings results throughout this week, offering another catalyst to markets. The packed slate of earnings results on deck includes Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), 3M (MMM), McDonald’s (MCD) and Boeing (BA), among many others.

As of the start of the week, only about 13{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} of S&P 500 companies had reported quarterly results, according to Goldman Sachs. And so far, one trend that has begun to emerge has been relatively weak commentary about the outlook for this year.

“Investors are very interested in forward-looking guidance from managements, and recent information on that front has been concerning,” Goldman Sachs chief U.S. equity strategist David Kostin wrote in a note. “Bank executives emphasized higher operating costs in the coming year.”

“Following the release of 4Q results, only six companies in the S&P 500 provided formal near-term guidance for 1Q 2022,” he added. “Unfortunately, five of the six firms guided below consensus for next quarter, including three of the stocks that actually beat expectations in 4Q.”

11:37 a.m. ET: Many tech executives ‘feel very bullish on the prospects of their companies’ despite stock volatility: Union Square Advisors president

Though the latest stretch of market volatility has hit technology shares especially hard, many tech executives are still feeling upbeat about the longer-term prospects of their companies, according to at least one pundit.

“In the public markets, with all the volatility, that creates day-to-day challenges, although we think that’s going to settle out here as we get through sort of the next wave of Fed decisions and this round of earnings,” Union Square Advisors co-founder and president Ted Smith told Yahoo Finance Live on Monday.

“Most tech executives with whom we speak feel very bullish on the prospects of their companies, feel very good about how they came out of the challenges of the pandemic and the resilience that those companies showed over the course of the last year and a half, two years,” he added. “And so most of them are feeling quite good about the medium and long term prospects for their individual companies but acknowledge that the near term at least stock market challenges, to the extent that those have an impact on their companies, make for a bit of a bumpy ride.”

10:47 a.m. ET: U.S. private sector services, manufacturing growth decelerates amid Omicron surge

Growth in both the private services and manufacturing sectors slowed sharply in early January as the Omicron variant exacerbated existing supply chain and labor shortages challenges.

IHS Markit’s preliminary January services purchasing managers index (PMI) slid to 50.9 from December’s 57.6. This marked the lowest level in about 18 months. Readings above the neutral level of 50.0 indicate expansion in a sector. Meanwhile, the institution’s manufacturing PMI also fell in January to a 15-month low, reaching 55.0 compared to December’s 57.7.

“Soaring virus cases have brought the U.S. economy to a near standstill at the start of the year, with businesses disrupted by worsening supply chain delays and staff shortages, with new restrictions to control the spread of Omicron adding to firms’ headwinds,” Chris Williamson, chief business economist at IHS Markit, wrote in a note. “However, output has been affected by Omicron much more than demand, with robust growth of new business inflows hinting that growth will pick up again once restrictions are relaxed.”

Stocks fall, Nasdaq drops as Netflix slides after subscribers miss

Stocks fall, Nasdaq drops as Netflix slides after subscribers miss

Stocks ended a volatile week lower, with investors rotating further away from growth and technology stocks that had outperformed early on during the pandemic.

The Nasdaq plummeted nearly 3{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}, clocking in its worst week since March 2020, while the S&P 500 and Dow accelerated losses. A day earlier, the Nasdaq Composite dropped more than 1{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}, adding to losses after sinking into a correction earlier this week. The Nasdaq has shed 12{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} for the year-to-date.

Shares of Netflix (NFLX) sank more than 20{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} after the company posted a first-quarter subscriber growth outlook that fell far short of expectations, with the streaming giant projecting 2.5 million new users for the first quarter of 2022 versus the 6.3 million anticipated, according to Bloomberg data. Shares of Disney (DIS) and Roku (ROKU) fell in sympathy. Meanwhile, Peloton (PTON) — which had been another darling of the so-called “stay-at-home” trade during the pandemic — recovered some losses after falling to a near two-year low on Thursday, after CNBC reported the company was cutting production of its fitness products due to flagging demand.

“It is these infamous stay-at-home plays … that had been bid up to valuations that get to the point where they’re priced for perfection,” Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott, told Yahoo Finance Live on Thursday. “Anything that is released about the companies’ investment results or prospects that doesn’t meet or exceed very elevated expectations leads to gigantic disappointment in the form of a share price decline.”

“This is indicative of companies that, again, have valuations that have been bid up by investors who, on disappointment, decide to sell first and ask questions later, and therefore leave huge carnage in their wake as valuations compress to better reflect prospects under a more normal economic climate,” Luschini added.

The drop in many closely watched, highly valued technology stocks — and the broader stock indexes — also came alongside ongoing investors jitters about a potential near-term move on interest rates from the Federal Reserve. The Fed’s next policy-setting meeting is set to take place next week, with market participants largely pricing in a first interest-rate hike out from the central bank after the Fed’s March meeting. These expectations for higher rates and less liquidity from the Fed this year have also been a key driver of recent equity price action, many strategists noted.

“I think there is a rotation going on towards those areas of the market that have been neglected for a long time — not just months, but years. Areas like financials and energy. Even health care, which is an area that had done a bit better during the pandemic, but really isn’t seeing any kind of multiples like it did in the past,” Jeffrey Kleintop, Charles Schwab chief global investment strategist, told Yahoo Finance Live on Thursday.

“I think those areas of the market have more durability here as we look at an environment where earnings growth is slowing so valuations matter more,” he added. “And many of these companies can look to generate earnings growth in this environment of rising interest rates and commodity prices, whereas tech is a bit more challenged as goods demand begins to slow.”

4:02 p.m. ET: Nasdaq notches worst week since 2020

Here were the main moves in markets as of 4:02 p.m. ET:

  • S&P 500 (^GSPC): -85.00 (-1.90{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}) to 4,397.73

  • Dow (^DJI): -449.89 (-1.30{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}) to 34,265.50

  • Nasdaq (^IXIC): -385.10 (-2.72{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}) to 13,768.92

  • Crude (CL=F): -$0.84 (-0.98{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}) to $84.71 a barrel

  • Gold (GC=F): -$12.10 (-0.66{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}) to $1,830.50 per ounce

  • 10-year Treasury (^TNX): -8.6 bps to yield 1.7470{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}

1:04 p.m. ET: ‘I certainly think technology and growth is going to be a sector you want to be in’

As the Nasdaq sinks further into a correction and individual technology stocks come under considerable pressure, some analysts see the pick-up of tech earnings season next week as the start of a potential reprieve for at least some of these growth names.

“The re-thinking of valuations really just follows in the wake of rising interest rates. So we averaged 1.5{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} on the yield on the U.S. 10-year for all of last year, and this year we likely average somewhere between 1.75{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} and 2{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a},” National Chief Market Strategist Art Hogan, told Yahoo Finance Live on Friday. “So that price and value calculation is obviously putting pressure on multiples across the technology complex.”

“At some point in time we’ll look at this and say we’re probably overdone and we’ve taken too much multiple compression,” he added. “And what likely will be the signal that that’s the case will be when we get into earnings season in earnest next week … and see where the winners and losers really sit.”

“I certainly think technology and growth is going to be a sector you want to be in [for] 2022,” Hogan said. “But I think you want to be in it in companies that measure themselves in price to earnings.”

10:40 a.m. ET: Leading Economic Index posts solid jump in December: Conference Board

An index tracking future domestic economic conditions accelerated in December, pointing to still-solid growth trends in the U.S. even amid ongoing concerns over the pandemic, inflation, and a more hawkish tilt to monetary policy.

The Conference Board’s closely watched Leading Economic Index (LEI) rose 0.8{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} in December, matching consensus estimates, according to Bloomberg data. This picked up from November’s 0.7{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} clip, which was downwardly revised from the 1.1{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} gain previously reported.

“The U.S. LEI ended 2021 on a rising trajectory, suggesting the economy will continue to expand well into the spring,” Ataman Ozyildirim, senior director of economic research at The Conference Board, said in a press statement.

“For the first quarter, headwinds from the Omicron variant, labor shortages, and inflationary pressures—as well as the Federal Reserve’s expected interest rate hikes—may moderate economic growth,” Ozyildirim added. “The Conference Board forecasts GDP growth for Q1 2022 to slow to a relatively healthy 2.2 percent (annualized). Still, for all of 2022, we forecast the US economy will expand by a robust 3.5 percent—well above the pre-pandemic trend growth.”

The index closed down 0.56{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} at 35,911.81. Citigroup (C) shares also fell after posting a similar miss on fixed-income and equities trading revenues for the quarter.

Peer bank Wells Fargo (WFC) shares rose, on the other hand, after posting quarterly revenue that topped estimates as both commercial and consumer loans picked up at the end of last year.

New economic data came in weaker-than-expected on Friday, adding to the risk-off tone in markets. U.S. retail sales fell 1.9{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} in December month-on-month, missing estimates for an only 0.1{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} dip and marking the biggest drop since February 2021. Investors this week have been weighing concerning signs of lingering price pressures across the U.S. economy against assertions from key central bank officials that the Federal Reserve is ready to take action to bring down inflation.

In Fed Governor Lael Brainard’s hearing before the Senate Banking Committee on Thursday, she suggested the central bank could begin raising interest rates — a move that would tighten financial conditions and help bring down inflation — “as soon as asset purchases are terminated.” The Federal Reserve is currently set to end its asset-purchase tapering process in March.

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said during this morning’s earnings call that he expected that on interest rate hikes this year, “there’s a pretty good chance there will be more than four — there could be six or seven.”

“What we’re seeing right now is a repricing of the markets, given anticipated rate hikes… That’s going to be the catalyst driving down the market,” WealthWise Financial CEO Loreen Gilbert told Yahoo Finance Live on Thursday. “It’s going to be a wild ride.”

And the bevy of recent inflation data has so far helped strengthen the case for a near-term move on monetary policy, many economists suggested. Thursday’s Producer Price Index (PPI) showed the biggest annual rise in wholesale prices on record, in data going back to 2010, even as monthly price gains moderated slightly. And this report came just a day following the December Consumer Price Index (CPI) showing the biggest surge in inflation since 1982. Many economists suggested inflationary pressures would continue at least through the first months of this year before gradually easing.

“Two of the biggest things have been the supply chain disruptions and the fiscal stimulus,” Matthew Miskin, John Hancock Investment Management co-chief investment strategist, told Yahoo Finance Live. “As the pandemic comes more under control this year, as the Omicron wave hopefully dissipates, we likely see the supply chain disruptions come off, and then we’re not going to get more fiscal stimulus … That in our view does cause inflation to come down over the course of the year.”

Rising prices have also been hitting companies’ profits as labor costs jump. Of the nearly two dozen S&P 500 companies that had reported fourth-quarter earnings results as of mid-week, 60{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} of these cited a negative impact from higher labor costs or shortages to sales or profits, according to FactSet.

10:11 a.m. ET: University of Michigan sentiment index drops to 68.8 in January, in second-lowest reading in a decade

Consumer sentiment fell more than expected in early January to reach one of its lowest readings in 10 years, as concerns over the inflation outlook and COVID-19 weighed on optimism.

The University of Michigan’s preliminary January Surveys of Consumers index came in at 68.8, falling from December’s 70.6. This was below consensus estimates for a reading of 70.0, according to Bloomberg data.

“While the Delta and Omicron variants certainly contributed to this downward shift, the decline was also due to an escalating inflation rate,” Richard Curtin, chief economist for the Surveys of Consumers, wrote in a statement. “Three-quarters of consumers in early January ranked inflation, compared with unemployment, as the more serious problem facing the nation.”

“Given that inflation’s impact is regressive, the Sentiment Index fell by 9.4{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} among households with total incomes below $100,000 in early January, but rose by 5.7{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} among households with incomes over that amount,” he added.

Overall, consumers’ one-year inflation expectations edged back up to 4.9{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}, or the highest level since 2008, from December’s 4.8{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a}.

7:43 a.m. ET: ‘The economy continues to do quite well despite headwinds related to the Omicron variant’: Dimon

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon struck an upbeat tone about the trajectory of the economic recovery even given the latest disruptions caused by the rapidly spreading Omicron variant.

“The economy continues to do quite well despite headwinds related to the Omicron variant, inflation and supply chain bottlenecks,” Dimon said in the bank’s fourth-quarter earnings report on Friday. “Credit continues to be healthy with exceptionally low net charge-offs, and we remain optimistic on U.S. economic growth as business sentiment is upbeat and consumers are benefiting from job and wage growth.”

Both JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo cited an increase in loans as contributing to results at the end of last year, suggesting consumers and businesses were remaining confident in borrowing and spending.

However, JPMorgan’s fixed-income and stock-trading businesses saw sales fall over last year. Fixed income sales and trading revenue declined 16{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} over last year to $3.33 billion, which the bank attributed to “a challenging trading environment in rates, as well as lower revenues in credit and currencies & emerging markets compared to a strong prior year.” Equities sales and trading revenue dipped 1.8{1b90e59fe8a6c14b55fbbae1d9373c165823754d058ebf80beecafc6dee5063a} to $1.95 billion.
